The Earworm: Joey BadA$$ “Haezus View”

Joey BadA$$: “Haezus View”

Joey BadA$$ is a 21-year old emcee from the Bed-Stuy neighborhood in Brooklyn, NYC.

He began writing and rapping at the age of 11. Eventually, he assumed the name “JayOhVee,” but disregarded it for his current moniker.

While attending Edward R. Murrow High School, he formed the  Pro Era (“Progressive Era”) hip-hop collective with friends Capital Steez, CJ Fly, and Powers Pleasant.

He initially drew attention in the industry in 2012 with the release of his first mixtape, 1999. His hazy, yet nimble, style is evocative of 90s-era East Coast/New York hip-hop. (Think Nas or Biggie.)

He soon began working with a cast of the best and brightest of the current hip-hop scene: Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Action Bronson, Casey Veggies, Mac Miller, etc…

2015 saw him release his debut studio effort, B4.DA.$$. The first three singles, “Big Dusty,” Christ Conscious,” and “No. 99” are the work of a young artist just hitting his prime.

“We comin’ for groups of guys in suits and ties
Who choose to hide truth from the eye
Grab a white collar by his white evil eye”

BadA$$ spent most of 2015 touring in support of the album.

2016 appears to be just as bright for him, as he has been cast in the recurring role of “Leon” on the critically acclaimed Mr. Robot.

The Earworm this week is the sixth track from B4.DA.$$, “Hazeus View.” Produced by Kirk Knight, the song focuses on the difficulties of being young and hungry in modern-day America, and the disillusionment that comes with it.

Enjoy! You can thank me later.
