Doomtree: “Bangarang”

When it comes to artistic endeavors, collaboration can be tricky. Finding a single partner who shares a similar vision yet a unique voice can be nearly impossible. But six other partners? That’s where magic comes into play.

Doomtree is an indie hip-hop collective that was formed in 2001. Started by P.O.S. and MK Larada, the Minnesota-based group soon grew to include current members Cecil Otter, Sims, Mike Mictlan, Dessa, Paper Tiger, and Lazerbeak. The various emcees (in both group and solo projects) write honest lyrics about the real world around them. They weave clever, poignant, and hopeful verses throughout bouncy, synth-filled, and infectious beats. In short, they are smart but they bang.

I came to discover Doomtree in 2007. P.O.S and Sims were at the Cleveland stop on the 2007 Warped Tour. P.O.S was at the DTR tent rapping. He and Sims called the fans in close. The vibe was intimate and immediate as they took turns destroying on the mic.

After his set, P.O.S invited fans to come to the merch table and challenge him to a thumb wrestling battle. The winner got their choice of any item on sale at the booth for free. Turns out he is a beast cuz he conquered all challengers.

I caught him again in February of 2009 when he came to town to perform at The Grog Shop. This time, he had the entire Doomtree family with him. The group was touring in support of their freshman album, Doomtree, which they had debuted seven months earlier.

November 2011 saw the release of the group’s second effort, No Kings. The single “Bangarang” was dropped in May of the following year. It features P.O.S, Cecil Otter, Sims, and Mike Mictlan. Har Mar Superstar stars in the video but doesn’t appear on the track.

This week’s Earworm is “Bangarang” by Doomtree. Enjoy!
